News and EventsThe new EPA emissions standards are in full swing. Some significant impacts on the Fire Service of importance to note, as of early 2010, the only engines we will be supplying will be of the Cummins engine family. The design practice of Cummins utilizes the familiar Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) with the addition of a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) chamber. Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is introduced to the exhaust system, thereby a chemical reaction takes place that basically turns the cocktail of exhaust to components to CO2 and water, with some other stuff of course. The DEF fluid is, widely available, and will become common place at most diesel filling stations as the year progresses. For detailed explanation on how the Cummins engines meet the new EPA requirements, testing strategies and results, as well as thorough technical information, please visit www.cummins.com. On the dealership front, Fire Equipment Sales & Service has experience some exciting changes and opportunities. First, we have expanded our sales territory back into Pennsylvania. We are now servicing the counties of Erie, Crawford, Warren, and McKean counties. Assisting us with this expansion is a new Sales Associate, Paul Trippy Jr. Paul is very experienced in the fire service and the sales arena. He brings extensive knowledge as a paid firefighter in the City of Dunkirk NY, previously a member of the Fredonia FD. Paul’s primary coverage area is in PA, however, he will also be assisting with departments in NY as well. He is energetic and very eager to assist. The early half of 2009, proved to be as slow as was expected after the big rush of orders beating the new NFPA regulations at the end of 2008. Late summer ’09 began some exciting shifts in momentum. As listed on our homepage, new orders from the Portland and Sheridan Fire Districts in Chautauqua Co. got us energized as well as some arrivals of scheduled deliveries coming off the production line. The Fluvanna FD and South Byron FD both took delivery of their new Crimson apparatus. Thank you to all these customers for their business. October and November brought on some very large opportunities. We were fortunate to be awarded a five-year contract with the City of Buffalo Fire Department. After just a few months of meeting with the Buffalo FD, we succeeded in helping them draft the build specifications that closely matched their existing fleet, affording the delivery of familiar pieces of equipment. The preconstruction meeting was held in early February 2010. The initial purchase orders are expected for a pair of Pumpers, and a 93’ mid-mount platform aerial. Additional PO’s are expected throughout the remainder of the contract agreement. In addition to the contract, an emergency purchase for a Crimson 103’ rear-mount aerial ladder has also been awarded. Several manufacturers were contacted by the fire department, affording everyone an opportunity. Again, Crimson and FESS were able to provide the desired apparatus at the desired price to the Buffalo FD. Shortly after the award from Buffalo, came an award from the Otto Fire District for a Crimson Legend Tanker. We experienced some bumps in the process, but I want to extend my sincerest thanks to the folks in Otto for their patience. It will pay off at delivery, scheduled for early April. We are always looking for energetic people to join or organization in both sales, and apparatus service. As we experience the opportunities to supply quality apparatus and equipment, the need for help is ever present. Specific areas of need would be Niagara, Orleans, Livingston, Allegany and McKean counties.
